Children who often use iPads and smartphones could be damaging their brains, a report has warned.
Child psychologists are worried that using technology gadgets such as tablets could have an impact on their social-emotional development.
The concern comes after researchers studied toddler's use of the latest devices such as iPads and the apps commonly used such as games and interactive educational media.
It was finalized that frequent usage of the gadgets during the early stages of childhood could 'interfere with development of empathy, social and problem solving skills'.
The Boston University School of Medicine team, who did the research study as a part of the journal Pediatrics, stated that children using technology were using the devices to replace the development of emotional and social interaction skills usually obtained by friendship and unstructured play.
"If these devices become the predominant method to calm and distract young children, will they be able to develop their own internal mechanisms of self-regulation?"
The Association of Teachers and Lecturers said last year that it feared that more toddlers are now unable to perform tasks because of an over-reliance on technology.
Mr Radesky added: "The impact these mobile devices are having on the development and behaviour of children is still relatively unknown.
"It has been well-studied that increased television time decreases a child's development of language and social skills."
"Mobile media use similarly replaces the amount of time spent engaging in direct human-human interaction."
